Abstract: A characterization is given of the automorphism groups of maps with Euler characteristic being coprime to the number of edges. Then a characterization is presented of arc-transitive maps. In particular, the map can only be a regular map or an arc-regular map of specific type if the automorphism group is non-solvable.
