Abstract: In this talk, I will give a brief introduction to the theory of operads and show how it contributes to the study of smash products of ring spectra. We will begin with the works of Bordman, Vogt, Stasheff and May on loop spaces. Then we will discuss the work of May and his collaborators on structured ring spectra.
