Abstract:  In this talk, we will concern about the homogenization problem of enhancing thin layers. We derive the effective diffusion tensor and thereby analyze the total effect of the thin layers. By considering the optimization of the trace of the tensor, we present a new notion called balanced patterns and some of its bizzare examples.
