Apr 29, 2026

From April 17 to 19, 2026, the finals of the 17th Chinese Mathematics Competitions for College Students (CMC) was held in Chengdu at Sichuan University and Chengdu University of Technology. The Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) team, consisting of six students from the Honor Class of Mathematics and coached by Lecturer Yunhao FU from the Department of Mathematics, won three first-place prizes, one second-place prize, and two third-place prizes nationally, setting a new best record in SUSTech’s history and fully demonstrating SUSTech’s outstanding achievements in cultivating top-notch innovative talents in mathematics.

The CMC was founded in 2009, aiming to stimulate college students’ interest in mathematics, enhance innovative thinking and problem-solving abilities, and provide an important platform for selecting and cultivating top-level innovative mathematical talents for the country. This year’s competition, hosted by the Chinese Mathematical Society, attracted more than 352,000 undergraduates from 1,322 universities.

The Department of Mathematics at SUSTech adheres to the principle of “promoting learning through competition and promoting teaching through competition,” regarding high-level academic competitions as a core means to hone students’ logical thinking and innovation abilities. By establishing sound competition incentive mechanisms and comprehensive support systems, the department strives to create a strong academic atmosphere. In the future, the Department of Mathematics will continue to optimize the training program for the Honor Class of Mathematics, strengthen competition support and guarantees, and endeavor to cultivate more top-level innovative talents for the development of the mathematics discipline.
