SUSTech to host International Workshop on Algebraic Topology

Mar 28, 2018

The International Workshop on Algebraic Topology will take place at the Southern University of Science and Technology from June 6 to June 9, 2018. This conference is co-organized by Dr. Yifei Zhu of SUSTech with seven other topologists across the Pacific. More than 40 researchers active in the field, from the US, Germany, China and other countries, will participate in this four-day event.

Algebraic topology is the study of properties of geometric spaces which are invariant under continuous deformations, with applications ranging from robotics to the shape of the universe. In recent years, it has played a role in data processing and information mining, being further applied to biological, medical, and social sciences. Meanwhile, algebraic topology and category theory might provide a proper mathematical language for modern condensed matter physics, with impact and prospect for theoretical physics.

This workshop is a satellite event for the Joint International Meeting of the American Mathematical Society and the Chinese Mathematical Society in Shanghai this June. The goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers in the field from around the world. The organizers believe that this unique opportunity to report on recent advances in the field at SUSTech will strengthen and broaden the connections in the international algebraic topology community, as well as showcase the research excellence of SUSTech.
