On plasmon modes in multi-layer structures

Abstract

We consider the plasmon resonances in multi-layer structures. We show the plasmon modes are equivalent to the eigenvalue problem of a matrix, whose order is the same to the number of layers. For any number of layers, the exact characteristic polynomial is derived by a conjecture, which is verified by using induction. It is shown that all the solutions to the characteristic polynomial are real and exist in the span [-1, 2]. Numerical examples are presented for finding all the plasmon modes.

邓又军，中南大学数学与统计学院教授，博士生导师、信息与计算科学系主任。湖南省杰出青年基金获得者、中国工业与应用数学会理事、不确定性系统分析与仿真专委会委员、湖南省数学会理事、湖南省计算数学与应用软件学会理事、美国数学评论《Math Review》评论员。

2005 年本科毕业于中南大学数学与统计学院，2010 年 6 月获中南大学理学博士学位。2010 年 9 月赴韩国仁荷大学师从国际反问题专家韩国科学院院士Hyeonbae Kang 教授从事 2 年博士后研究工作；2012 年 9 月赴法国巴黎高等师范学院师从国际反问题专家欧洲科学院院士Habib Ammari 教授从事1 年博士后研究工作。
